An Italian rock crystal bowl, possibly Milanese, circa 1600.

The shaped ovoid bowl has auricular handles and is carved with leafy scrolls; two flaws skilfully masked by birds, 10.5cm long.

The bowl appears in the 1690 Devonshire Schedule, or Deed of Gift, which records an immense bequest from Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire (1619-1689), to her daughter Anne, Countess of Exeter (1649-1703).

This lists under ‘Christalls Garnisht and plaine’: ‘A wrought ribd Christall Cup with two Eares.’
