Oil on canvas, 120cm by 169cm. In a carved and gilded frame.
An entry in the 1763 Burghley Inventory in the distinctive hand of Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793), records: ‘Queen Elizabeths room …two large landscapes by Tempesta.’ and ‘the North dressing room … two large landscapes by Tempesta.’
The artist specialised in landscape painting, sometimes in collaboration with figural painters.
He was the brother-in-law of Pieter Mulier, (1637-1701), who was known as Tempesta.
