A Miniature of an Ecclesiastic, by Abraham Bosse (1602-1678).

Oval, plumbago on parchment, in a rectangular dark-stained fruitwood veneer frame, 9.9cm.
The spandrel inscribed: ‘A.Domini/ 1671 etatis (sic) suae 45’.

Abraham Bosse was a French artist and printmaker. Hundreds of etchings are attributed to him, on a variety of subjects, most of which were illustrations for books.

He was the son of a tailor and it has been suggested that this was the reason for the closely observed detail in his depiction of materials and clothes.
