The Holy Family and Saint Francis, by Alessandro Turchi (1578-1649).

Oil on black marble, 44.5cm by 34.5cm.

The painting was almost certainly an acquisition of Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793).

Another version by Turchi exists in a private collection in Brittany.

Alessandro Turchi was an Italian artist of the early Baroque.

He was born in Verona, where he was active until late in life, when he moved to Rome, where he died.

Apart from altarpieces, religious works and frescoes, he painted many cabinet pictures depicting historical subjects which he often painted on black marble.
