The Infant Christ with Flowers, after Carlo Dolci (1616-1686).

Oil on panel, 24cm by 18cm.

This is one of the paintings purchased by John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700), whilst on the Grand Tour as by Carlo Dolci.

However, it is now thought to be a studio repetition after the original, now in the Thyssen Bornemisza Collection in Madrid.

On the back is written: ‘veni/in ortvm mevm/soror Mearma’ from the Song of Solomon, chapter 5.

The 1688 Burghley Inventory records: ‘My Ladyes Closett…a peice of a young Christ whole length.’
