Abelard presenting Hymen to Heloise, by Angelica Kauffman, R.A. (1741-1807).

Oil on canvas, circular, 61cm diameter.

The painting is one of a group of four similarly framed, the others being: PIC104, PIC109 and PIC289.

The Swiss-born artist Angelica Kauffmann is perhaps best known for her history painting, although she was also an immensely skilled portrait painter and landscape artist.

She had a highly successful career in both Rome and London, and in 1768 was one of two female founder members of the Royal Academy.

Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793), sat to her for his portrait in Naples in 1764 whilst on his first Grand Tour (PIC781) and subsequently became one of her patrons.
