A Yixing stoneware snuff bottle, Chinese, 1780-1860.

A circular bottle, with a recessed circular panel on each side, decorated in buff slip.

On one side, a river scene is depicted and on the other, sprays of blossom, all reserved on a blue enamel ground, 5.7cm.

Yixing, in the Province of Jiangsu, was celebrated for its stonewares from the 17th Century onwards.

The presence of rich local deposits of clay, together with a prosperous community, led to a thriving trade; largely in teawares and smaller scholarly items.
