Of almost square form, in a dark-stained fruitwood veneer frame, 9cm by 10.7cm. Signed.
This charming mid 17th Century wintry landscape, with a track leading to a distant town, was part of an immense bequest from Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire (1619-1689) to her daughter Anne, Countess of Exeter (1649-1703).
The inventory recording the bequest, which is known as the Devonshire Schedule or Deed of Gift, lists: ‘ffour pictures Landskipps Square two of them winter pieces.’ See MIN0032 & MIN0033.
