A Visitors’ Book commissioned to mark the Royal Visit of 1844.

The book is bound in Royal blue velvet, with silver-gilt spandrels and clasps.

The page edges depict holly on a gilt background around a central cartouche with the date 1844.

It was signed by Queen Victoria on Tuesday, 12th November 1844, the day of her arrival at Burghley and by Prince Albert the following day.

This was the day on which he stood as sponsor, or godparent, at the christening of Lady Victoria Cecil, the youngest child of Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter (1795-1867) and his wife, Isabella.
