A two-tiered box for incense selection, late 17th/early 18th Century.

Decorated with paulownias, maples and cherry blossoms; the bottom tier contains three smaller boxes (one missing its cover) that can be pushed out using an opening in the base of the box, height 5.8cm, width 7.6cm, depth 6.3cm.

1835 Inventory: “Japan Closet, Glass case opposite the window, A small Box with two divisions, the one containing three Boxes, the other a tray gold Japan embossed with flowers”.

1867 Inventory: “Cabinets, No 88 Japan Closet, A small box with 2 divisions, one containing 3 boxes, the other a tray, gold japan, embossed flowers”. The tray has been missing since before 1835.
