A Japanese export lacquer two-tiered box for incense selection, late 17th/early 18th Century.

Decorated with stylised paulownias, maple leaves and cherry blossoms; the bottom tier contains three smaller boxes (one missing its cover) that can be pushed out using an opening in the base of the box, height 5.8cm, width 7.6cm, depth 6.3cm.

The 1835 Burghley Inventory records: ‘Japan Closet, Glass case opposite the window, A small Box with two divisions, the one containing three Boxes, the other a tray gold Japan embossed with flowers.’

The 1867 Burghley Inventory records: ‘Cabinets, No 88 Japan Closet, A small box with 2 divisions, one containing 3 boxes, the other a tray, gold japan, embossed flowers.’

The tray is now missing.
