The spoon appears in the inventory at Burghley known as the 1690 Devonshire Schedule, or Deed of Gift.
This recorded an immense bequest from Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire (1619-1689), to her daughter Anne, Countess of Exeter (1649-1703), and comprised the entire contents of her suite of private apartments at Chatsworth.
Under the heading ‘Cornelian Coralls, Garnetts and other Stones’ appears: ‘A Cornelian spoone with a white Cornelian Handle.’
