A Tournai biscuit group of ‘Matrimony and Freedom’, circa 1770.

The group is modelled as a youth presenting a dove to a maiden who is holding an open bird cage. They are set before a flowering tree, with a recumbent hound at their feet.

Porcelain was made at a factory in Tournai, Belgium, from about the mid 18th Century until the mid 19th Century.

Figural groups made at Tournai often represented rustic scenes.
