A tinted photograph of William Thomas, later 5th Marquess of Exeter (1876-1956), as a child.

Oval, in a gilt-metal mount and fitted leather case, 10cm.

William inherited the title at a young age on the early death of his father in 1898.

It was a position he held for the first half of the 20th Century, during which time he carefully, and successfully, husbanded the Burghley Estate through years of agricultural decline and two World Wars, in the first of which he served.
