A tinted photograph of William Alleyne, 3rd Marquess of Exeter, by K. Hargreaves.

This photograph, on ivory, of the 3rd Marquess (1825-1895), shows him in old age.

He was an eminent pisciculturalist, establishing a large and successful trout farm at Burghley and he also bred a prize-winning herd of dairy shorthorn cattle on the Home Farm.

His great love was sailing and he spent a considerable amount of time sailing his magnificent steam yacht “Queen of Palmyra” off the Isle of Wight, where, shortly after inheriting the title in 1867, he  became Commodore of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club.
