A sweetmeat basket, 18th Century.

This rather charming sweetmeat basket has a wrythen stem above a domed moulded foot and a moulded pan-topped bowl with a folded rim;  the loop handle ends in raspberry prunt terminals. In well to do households in the 18th Century, such baskets would usually be found on the dinner table during the dessert course and would contain preserved fruit, or similar dry sweetmeats.
