A sweetmeat basket, 18th Century.

This rather charming sweetmeat basket has a wrythen stem above a domed moulded foot and a moulded pan-topped bowl with a folded rim; the loop handle ends in raspberry prunt terminals.

In well-to-do households in the 18th Century, such baskets would usually be found on the dinner table during the dessert course and would contain preserved fruit, or similar dry sweetmeats.
