The painting and its pair PIC541 appear in the 1763 Burghley Inventory, in which Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793) noted: ‘Queen Elizabeths room… four flower pieces by Baptest.’
The Franco-Flemish artist specialised in the painting of flower pieces and also worked closely with the tapestry workshops at both the Gobelins and Beauvais, creating cartoons of fruit and flowers for the weavers.
He spent the last nine years of his life in England painting more than fifty overdoors and overmantels at Montagu House in Bloomsbury, some of which still survive.
