The 1763 Burghley Inventory records: ‘The Dining Room…Over the West door-Still Life by Rorstraten.’
Roestraten, who was born in Haarlem, was a pupil of Frans Hals (1582-1666), and later also became his son-in-law.
He moved to London in 1666, where he was noted as a fine portraitist, although it was his amazing ability to paint silver for which he was most famous.
