A square blue and white flask, Chinese, late Ming, circa 1620-30.

The flask is of Dutch glass shape, decorated with four panels of Buddhist emblems and lotus.

The shoulders have a blue diaper pattern enclosing four small reserves, 19cm.

The 1690 Devonshire Schedule, or Deed of Gift, an inventory recording an enormous bequest from Elizabeth, Countess of Devonshire (1619-1689), to her daughter Anne, Countess of Exeter (1649-1703), lists: ‘A square blue and white Bottle with a small neck without a cover.’
