Oil on canvas, 43.5cm by 67cm.
It is possible that the following entry in the 1763 Burghley Inventory refers to this painting: ‘The Japan Closet….a Landscape by Paul Brill.’
Paul Brill was a Flemish painter and printmaker who spent most of his working life in Rome.
He was known especially for his landscapes; his Italianate landscapes becoming a major influence on landscape painting in both Italy and Northern Europe.
