A small octagonal Kakiemon cup, Japanese, late 17th Century.

This little cup is painted in the Kakiemon palette, excluding yellow, with four panels of either hibiscus or Buddhist emblems.

These alternate with four panels of karakusa scroll, executed in a reverse technique on an iron-red ground, heightened with gilding.

The rim is dressed in iron-brown, 7cm.

This design was later copied by the Chelsea manufactury.
