A silver book-shaped double frame, late 19th Century.

The frame contains two tinted photographic portraits of William Alleyne, 3rd Marquess of Exeter (1825-1895) and his son Brownlow, 4th Marquess of Exeter (1849-1898), within blue enamel borders, 12x9cm.

Above the 3rd Marquess is the inscription ‘Blessed are the merciful’ and beneath, the dates of his birth, marriage and death.

Above the 4th Marquess is inscribed: ‘Blessed are the pure in heart’ and beneath, the dates of his birth, marriage and death.

The front of the ‘book’ has the inscription: ‘G.S.C. October 17/1848/1898’ beneath an earl’s coronet and the reverse: ‘From her daughter and son-in-law Mary and James Hozier Oct. 17. 1898.

The gift was to mark the fiftieth wedding anniversary of the marriage of the 3rd Marquess to Lady Georgina Sophia Pakenham on 17th October, 1848.

Sadly, the 4th Marquess, who survived his father by only three years, had died six months before.
