A Sibyl by Silvia Stizzio, first half 18th Century.

Oval, 8.8cm, in a rectangular gilt-metal frame with ribbon-tie surmount.

The miniature is painted en grisaille on ivory. A label on the reverse of the frame is inscribed: ‘Silvia Stizzio/fecit al Rome.’

Sibyls were prophtesses, or oracles, of the Ancient world. They are often depicted, as here, wearing a large turban and loose flowing garments.
