A Sibyl by Silvia Stizzio, first half 18th Century.

Oval 8.8cm, rectangular, in a gilt-metal frame with ribbon-tie surmount. The miniature is painted en grisaille on ivory; a label on the reverse of the frame is inscribed: “Silvia Stizzio/fecit al Rome”. Sibyls were prophtesses, or oracles, of the Ancient world. They are often depicted, as here, wearing a large turban and loose flowing garments.
