A set of twenty eight George II mahogany library armchairs, circa 1745.

With rectangular padded backs, padded arms with downswept leaf and husk carved supports and whorl handles.

The padded seats on acanthus leaf and cabochon carved cabriole legs with claw and ball feet upon castors, 99cm high.

Ten of the armchairs are gilt and covered with late 18th Century needlework and eighteen are plain mahogany and covered with modern fabric.

The 1763 Burghley Inventory records: ‘Queen Elizabeths room….eight mahogany armed chairs with tapestry backs & seats.’
