A set of seven Derby butter tubs and four covers, circa 1758.

The octagonal tubs are of chamfered, rectangular form and are decorated with birds, winged insects and sprays and sprigs of flowers.

Each domed cover is surmounted by a strawberry knop with applied leaves, height 12cm, length 12.7cm.

The 1804 Burghley Inventory, which describes them as cups, records: ‘No. 103 Closet to No. 54 or 3rd George room, 6 octagon strawberry top’t cups & covers.’
