A section of the hangings from the Black & Yellow State Bed.

The 1763 Burghley Inventory records: “the black bed-chamber…. a black satin bed embroidered with flowers and lined with yellow satin.” The hangings were originally reworked in 1838 with applied crewelwork flowers and foliage and were further conserved in the 1990s, when the crewel work was applied to new black backing material, lined with yellow fabric.
