A white marble figure of a sleeping child, attributed to Pierre-Etienne Monnot (1657-1733).

The child is shown sleeping on his side, 52cm.

The 1763 Burghley Inventory records:  ‘the dining room, 4 George room…..Child sleep’g by Pet’r Monot of Besancon white marble.’

John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700) purchased several works by Monnot whilst in Rome on his third Grand Tour.

He also commissioned portrait busts of himself and his countess and a spectacular tomb monument for them both, to be placed in the family church of St. Martin’s in Stamford.
