The 1763 Burghley Inventory records: ‘the dining room, 4 George room…..Child sleep’g by Pet’r Monot of Besancon white marble.’
John, 5th Earl of Exeter (1648-1700) purchased several works by Monnot whilst in Rome on his third Grand Tour.
He also commissioned portrait busts of himself and his countess and a spectacular tomb monument for them both, to be placed in the family church of St. Martin’s in Stamford.
