This is one of the few Dutch paintings in the Burghley Collection and is by perhaps the greatest landscape artist of the Dutch Golden Age.
It can be dated to the 1660’s and is possibly one of those described by Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter in the 1763 Inventory: ‘Queen Elizabeths room ……two pictures of water falls by Risdale.’
