A cinnabar lacquer snuff bottle, Chinese, 1750-1795.

The bottle, of spade form, is of cinnabar lacquer on a green ground.

It is carved on one side to depict a figure seated at a go table on a veranda. On the other, a figure sits astride a wall in conversation with another figure, 6.1cm.

The colour of cinnabar lacquer is obtained by mixing cinnabar (mercury), with the lacquer sap.
