A cinnabar lacquer snuff bottle, Qianlong, (1736-1795).

The bottle, of spade form, is of cinnabar lacquer on a green ground. It is carved on one side to depict a figure seated at a go table on a veranda and on the other, with a figure astride a wall in conversation with another figure, 6.1cm.

The colour of cinnabar lacquer is obtained by mixing cinnabar (mercury), with the lacquer sap.
