This painting was part of a bequest in 1929 to William, 5th Marquess of Exeter (1876-1956) from Sir James Hozier, 2nd Baron Newlands.
He was an uncle by marriage; his wife being a daughter of the 3rd Marquess and Marchioness of Exeter.
Frans Boudewijns was a Flemish landscape painter, draughtsman and etcher, known mainly for his Italianate landscapes with architectural features, riverscapes and coastal scenes.
