A quartz snuff bottle, Chinese, 1800-1900.

The bottle is of agate with dendritic inclusions which have been used with great skill by a craftsman to suggest the moon setting into a sea of crested waves, 5.2cm.

The use of the white and mossy inclusions in the material to depict the scene, without the need for any carving, other than the rounding of the body, is a touch of inspiration which transforms a stone of no intrinsic value into a work of great art.
