A quartz snuff bottle, 1760-1900.

The bottle is of agate and of pebble form, carved to suggest a bat and clouds.

Agate is a common rock formation comprised of mainly quartz and chalcedony and has a wide variety of colours.

It was widely used in ancient times, for example in jewellery and other ornamentation in Ancient Greece and by early civilisations in the Indus Valley.
