A quartz snuff bottle, Chinese, 1780-1850.

The bottle is of dark honey chalcedony, with dark inclusions on the front carved to depict the scholar, Shou Lao, walking across a rocky ledge towards a goose, which is perched on top of a tall outcrop of rock.

A small boy is following behind and there are numerous birds in flight, both above, and around the shoulders of the bottle, 6.9cm.

The craftsman has shown great skill in utilising the natural inclusions in the stone to depict the subjects.
