The German-born van der Mijn came from a family of Dutch artists; his father, Herman, and all five of his siblings were considered to be good painters.
His career began in Holland, but he later worked in England for many years, both in London and in the provinces and was considered a portrait painter of some note.
It would seem, however, that he was never as successful as he might have been because ‘he was of mean address and vulgar manners’ and he eventually died in impoverished circumstances.
