A Portrait of a Lady, 18th Century Follower of Rembrandt (1606-1669).

Oil on panel, 48.5cm by 40.2cm.

This portrait, thought in the past to be of Rembrandt’s mother, may be by Thomas Worlidge (1700-1766) who was born in Peterborough and noted for his etched and painted imitations of Rembrandt.

It was left to Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793), by a Mrs. Wilkinson, according to a label on the reverse: ‘For the Earl of Exeter Left him by Mrs Jane Wilkinson.’
