A porcelain scent flask.

The flask is moulded and coloured as a cowrie shell. It is decorated with green and white dotted bands and has a gilt-metal stopper, mounts and chain. It was originally thought to have been Japanese, although this has now been discounted. Scent flasks, in many different forms, were made by European porcelain manufactories from the 18th Century, but unfortunately, nothing is known about the origin, or date, of this rather charming piece.
