A Plan of Burghley with proposed Alterations, by William Daniel Legg (d. 1806).

Pen and black ink and grey wash on laid paper, 103cm by 160cm.

The plan, with proposed changes for Brownlow, 9th Earl of Exeter (1725-1793), who had inherited the title on the death of his father in 1754, is inscribed in the upper centre with the title and the words: ‘by/Lancelot Brown/1756.’

However, a close examination of other plans in the archives, known to be by the Stamford architect William Daniel Legg, whose handwriting is identical to that on this plan, reveal this in fact to be by Legg.

However, he normally signed his plans in the lower right corner, which is missing on this plan.
