A Pastoral Landscape with Figures, including a young Shepherd with Sheep and a Goat, Follower of the Bassano.

Oil on canvas, 41.5cm by 64.5cm.

The Bassano family of painters worked in Venice and the Veneto from the early 16th to the early 17th Century.

Jacopo (1510-1592) trained with his father Francesco the Elder (1474-1539) and his four sons all became artists.

The better known were Francesco the Younger (1549-1592) and Leandro (1557-1622).

Jacopo’s biblical subjects were often set in realistic landscape settings, with scenes of peasant life and animals.

His sons’ paintings were very similar in style and subject matter and family collaboration was common.
