A pair of Japanese export lacquer shell-shaped incense containers, late 17th Century.

The lid of each container is decorated with a landscape and a pavilion in flat and raised makie with gold and aokin on a black lacquer ground: the sides with lilies and trailing floral sprays, 8cm.
