The shells are carved with portrait profiles of Brownlow, 2nd Marquess of Exeter, KG (1795-1867) and his wife Isabella (1803-1879), daughter of William Stephen Poyntz of Cowdray.
They are depicted as a Roman Emperor and Empress.
