A pair of Arita blue and white sleeve vases or rollwagons, Japanese, circa 1660-80.

Each cylindrical body is painted in greyish underglaze cobalt blue in a style derived indirectly from Chinese ‘Transitional’ porcelain, 28.5cm.

The 1763 Burghley Inventory records: ‘Queen Elizabeths room….two larger blew and white row-waggons.’
