William Alleyne (1825-1895), portrayed here in the year of his marriage to Lady Georgina Sophia Pakenham, succeeded his father as 3rd Marquess of Exeter in 1867.
The artist William Egley (1798-1870), received no professional training, but exhibited widely throughout his life, including at the Royal Academy.
He was considered to be particularly successful in his portrayal of children.
