A Miniature of a Scholar, said to be Justus Lipsius, Continental School, circa 1660.

Oval, on parchment, in a silver frame, 5.5cm.

Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) was born in Brabant, in what is now Belgium.

He taught at the universities of Jena, Leiden and Leuven.

Lipsius was a Catholic philosopher and humanist whose writings on ancient Stoicism influenced many of the great thinkers of his time.
