A Louis XV gilt-bronze mounted kingwood bureau-plat, mid 18th Century.

The crossbanded serpentine top inset with green tooled leather.

With three frieze drawers inlaid with floral marquetry above a serpentine apron and cabriole legs with C-scroll acanthus leaf mounts, ending in brass sabots, 74.5cm by 174cm.

The bureau-plat is stamped underneath “ASWARBY.” 

Aswarby Park in Lincolnshire was the childhood home of Isabella Whichcote (1857-1917), daughter of Sir Thomas Whichcote 7th Bt.

In 1875 she married Lord Burghley (1849-1898) who inherited the title as 4th Marquess of Exeter on the death of his father in 1895.
