A Limoges enamel plate painted with Jupiter and Juno.

Attributed to Pierre Penicaud in the workshops of Pierre Courteys (1520-1602), the reverse dated 1560, 19cm.

Enamels made in Limoges are generally considered the finest painted enamelware produced in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Limoges enamels were largely the work of a few families, amongst whom Corteys is numbered.

This plate has been in the Burghley Collection since the time of the first Lord Burghley (1520-1598).
