A Miniature of a Lady, English School, after George Engleheart (1750-1829).

Oval, on ivory, in a paste-set silver frame with swivel surmount and gilt-metal reverse, 4.6cm. Circa 1790.

Unfortunately, the identity of this fashionable and elegantly dressed lady with piled and curled powdered hair is unknown.

Engleheart, who studied with Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792), and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1773-1822, was considered one of the foremost miniaturists of his time.

His distinctive style was said to imbue his sitters with a sense of gentleness, elegance and serenity, all of which are so apparent in this miniature.
