Oval, in a gilt bezel inset in a rectangular gilt-metal base; the interior lid of a snuff box, 4cm. Signed with initials and dated: ‘GS 1750’.
The identity of the sitter is unknown.
The artist was originally a footman, who taught himself the art of watercolour painting on ivory and later, the complex art of enamel painting, which had become extremely popular.
His first works date from the early 1740s; the bulk of his enormous output painted between 1745 and 1761.
