A grisaille Medallion of Putti playing with a Goat, surrounded by a Garland of Flowers, by Piat Joseph Sauvage (1744-1818).

Oil on canvas, 93.5cm by 122cm.

The artist, a Belgian, studied for some time in Antwerp, before moving to Paris, where he was accepted into the Académie Royale de Paris and was later chosen as official painter to both the Prince de Condé and Louis XVI.

His work seems to have continued unabated during the upheaval of the French Revolution, though from 1804-1807 he was painting porcelain figurines at the Sèvres factory.
