The large oval amethyst of the pendant is set within a gold and rose diamond cusped mount and is accompanied by a gold collar, although the jewel may also be worn as a brooch.
The pendant earrings are similarly set and each is surmounted by a marquess’s coronet set with pearls, emeralds and rubies.
The case, by Londen & Ryder, 1871, is tooled with the inscription: ‘To the best of wives and mothers from her affectionate husband April 30, 1871 GSC.’
This was a gift from William Alleyne, 3rd Marquess of Exeter (1825-1895), to his wife Georgina Sophia Cecil, to whom he was married in 1848.
