A glass overlay snuff bottle, Chinese, Yangzhou, 1850-1950.

The bottle has a pale green overlay on an opaque white ground.

Depicted on one side is a figure being paddled along in a log boat and on the reverse, a lady holding a flower, enclosed by a palm-fringed circular window and pierced rocks.

With mask and ring handles on the shoulders, 5.8cm.

During the 19th Century Yangzhou, in the coastal province of Jiangsu, was a prosperous commercial centre which had its own artistic community.

Glass overlay bottles in this very distinctive style have been traced to Yangzhou and can be dated with some accuracy.
