A glass overlay snuff bottle, Chinese, 1800-1860.

A pale green single glass overlay on an opaque pink ground.

On both sides of the bottle are depicted a clump of bamboo beside a rocky outcrop, 5.8cm.

Bamboo is one of the most popular subjects in Chinese art.

It is a material linked to the literati from early times because of its elegance, the manner in which it grows, straight and true, and the difficulty in painting it as a subject.
